Celebrating 50 years since its inception, the Martinů Quartet is making a rare visit to Edinburgh as part of its anniversary UK tour.
With numerous accolades and recording awards, the quartet is considered a leading light of the Czech quartet school. They will present Czech music of Martinů and Dvořák, but begin with Ravel's beautiful string quartet, widely considered his first masterpiece. Martinů wrote his second quartet some twenty years later, perhaps also in Paris. Although an early work, it already shows his unique tonal colours and sensitivity to melodic beauty. The concert concludes with Dvořák's uplifting A flat major quartet, reflecting his joy on returning to his homeland from America.
