WHAT'S ON / Tord Gustavsen: Hymns & Visions with Simin Tander & Jarle Vespestad

We're delighted to welcome back Norwegian jazz pioneer Tord Gustavsen with an exciting new project Hymns & Visions which features Tord (piano, electronics), Simin Tander (vocals), Jarle Vespestad (drums) and Daniel Wold (sound design).

For his upcoming album on ECM Records, Tord Gustavsen turns his attention to interpretations of ancient Norwegian hymns. These tunes are, for him, his original and deepest ‘standards’ as a jazz musician, and the process was initiated by the inclusion of the hauntingly powerful version of Eg veit i himmerik ei borg (A Castle in Heaven) on his latest quartet release Extended Circle.

Tord met Afghan-German vocalist Simin Tander – a rising star on the European jazz and world music scenes – in 2014, and their collaboration has developed since then. Together with Afghan poet B Hamsaaya, they translated and re-worked the lyrics of a selection of Norwegian traditional hymns into Pashto, the mother-tongue of Simin’s late father.

The ensemble will also play new compositions by Tord based on English translations of Sufi poetry as well as instrumental music. For the first time on stage, Tord will use subtle live electronics to add depth and new layers to the sensual minimalist of his work alongside Simin’s warm and vibrant vocal art.

"Gustavsen's tunes are hypnotically strong... masterpiece of the understated"
