Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen makes a welcome return to The Queen's Hall with the Edinburgh premiere of his new ensemble. Gustavsen has emerged as a quietly bewitching (and best-selling) new star among Europe's current crop of world-beating piano trios. First coming to attention as Norwegian singer Silje Nergaard's diligently poised accompanist it's been his three highly lyrical solo albums for ECM that have made him a star across the continent but also in Japan and America.
He appears here with his new quartet that features the core trio of drummer Jarle Vespestad and bassist Mats Eilertsen but with the significant addition of saxophonist Tore Brunborg. The latter draws on Jan Garbarek's haunting tone and adds a distinctive folk sensibility to Gustavsen's mesmerizing melodies.
