Scottish Ensemble: Winter Light
11 December 2009 at 7:45pmat The Queen's Hall
Curated by John Woolrich, composer
The Scottish Ensemble continue their tradition of ‘Christmas with a twist’ in this candlelit concert. The composer John Woolrich has curated a special programme to frame his new work for the Scottish Ensemble, ‘Capriccio’.
The programme opens with the Prelude to Capriccio from Richard Strauss’s opera, a work of searingly intense emotion. The second half of the concert is devoted to Schoenberg’s bittersweet and gorgeous Verklarte Nacht. These pieces frame the Scottish première of John Woolrich’s new piece, and as a 40th Anniversary gift to the Ensemble, John is arranging a group of Italian songs by Hugo Wolf for the full forces of the Ensemble.
“There are Christmas concerts, and then there are the Scottish Ensemble Christmas concerts” (The Telegraph)
Some great reviews of the Ensemble here in The Guardian; The Times Online and The Scotsman
