SCO: Romantic Spring - Schumann 200
25 March 2010 at 7:30pmat The Queen's Hall
Olari Elts: conductor; Karen Cargill: mezzo soprano
Weber: Overture, Der Freischütz; Wagner: Wesendonck Lieder; Schumann: Symphony No.1 in B flat, Op.38 'Spring'
If there were a league table of Romantic composers, these three (Weber, Wagner and Schumann) would never be out of the top six. Between them they created and evolved the musical language with which to express the quintessential Romantic bond with nature as a spiritual force, developing one of the most expressive and fertile art forms imaginable. After her turn as Cleopatra in December and in Berlioz’s L’Enfance du Christ in February, the marvellous Karen Cargill returns in Wagner’s passionate love songs.
Pre-concert talk: 6.30pm (free to ticket holders). Dr Fiona Elliott gives a cultural perspective of Schumann and his time.
There’s further celebration of the Schumann anniversary with a rare performance of the Mass in C minor on 6 May at The Queen’s Hall.
