Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano
2 December 2009 at 7:00pmat The Queen's Hall
Legendary composer, performer and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto is touring the UK for the first time in 15 years to celebrate the release of his new CD ‘out of noise’ and The Queen's Hall is delighted to host the only Scottish performance.
A founder member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sakamoto's best-known solo work is probably the soundtrack to Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, but his 1987 score for Bertolucci's The Last Emperor won him an Oscar, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, as well as the New York, Los Angeles and British Film Critics Association awards for best original soundtrack. Since then, he has worked with Bertolucci (The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha), Oliver Stone (Wild Palms), Pedro Almodovar (High Heels), and Brian De Palma (Snake Eyes, Femme Fatale). He has collaborated with a huge variety of other musicians including David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Brian Wilson and Youssou N’Dour.
Sakamoto recently reunited with Yellow Magic Orchestra for one performance at Al Gore's Live Earth festival in July 2007 in Kyoto, a performance which Rolling Stone magazine called the best reunion of the global festival. YMO also performed at the Massive Attack-curated Meltdown last year and Sakamoto will curate the first ever Japanese Meltdown in Tokyo 2010.
