Phil Bancroft’s ‘Small As The World’
28 April 2012 at 8:00pmat The Queen's Hall
A prime mover on the Scottish jazz scene since the 1980s, saxophonist/composer Phil Bancroft’s latest project collides the power of music, visual image, humour and communication technology. It takes the inner worlds and memories of you - the audience - to make an interactive, moving, multi-media jazz celebration of what “home” means in today’s world.
Small as the World creates a musical journey carries you from the personal and domestic, through memories of childhood, our relationship with democracy, nationalism & war, to Planet Earth and beyond. It will be performed by a seven piece band including folk supergroup LAU's fiddler Aidan O’Rourke and Scottish Jazz Award’s Instrumentalist of the Year, guitarist Graeme Stephen amongst the soloists. The music evokes Jarrett/Redman melodies, homespun fiddle rounds, Junk Magic samples/improvisation, lyrical chamber music, George Clinton Funkadelia, but with a heart all of its own.
The show will include a guest musician playing via Skype from their own home, and images and words from you, the public.
"Powerful Scottish creator Bancroft explores the meanings of ‘home’ through compositions and improv, movies, an interactive website, audience participation and more" (The Guardian)
