Odemba OK Jazz

1 October 2009 at 8:30pm
at The Queen's Hall

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of the King of Congolese Rumba, Grand Maitre ‘Franco’ Luambo Makiadi and the release of Francophonic Vol 2 by Sterns Music, Organised Noise brings you the legendary Odemba OK Jazz All Stars, from the DR Congo to Scotland.

Led by Franco’s OK Jazz guitarist ‘Dizzy’ Mandjeku, this incredible 12 piece are the finest exponents of Congolese ‘Odemba’ Rumba and one of the best live acts in the world. Featuring material by Grand Maitre ‘Franco’ Luambo Makiadi alongside their own compositions the show will be both a tribute to one of the masters of African music and a chance to hear new material in the distinctive Odemba style. Dominated by its hypnotic guitar riffs, driving rhythm and bass, plaintive horns and melodic vocals, it is one of the key precursors to soukous, the most infectious of dance styles.

The band have only played a handful of dates in the UK, but wherever they have, they have picked up legions of fans, acclaim from the likes of Andy Kershaw as well as an Angel Award for Best Live Show at Brighton Festival. This will be the first time they will play in Scotland and will be a show not to be missed.

“one of the best live acts on the circuit" (Liverpool Echo)
“Odemba enjoy a reputation as one of the world’s most swinging bands” (Kultuur Kaffee)
