The Light Comes Back

Scottish poet and playwright Liz Lochhead collaborates with Dundee indie-pop band The Hazey Janes centering on the poem ‘The Optimistic Sound’ that Lochhead composed in memory of her great friend, the Scottish songwriter Michael Marra .  Featuring inventive saxophonist Steve Kettley, The Light Comes Back creates a warm-hearted hybrid of lyrical monologue with evocative folk/jazz sounds, at once mourning and celebrating Marra’s presiding spirit.

The show had its origins in the darkest days of December 2015 when they all worked long hours in the studio at An Tobar on Mull to create the album The Light Comes Back. The cover image was drawn by Liz at dawn on the morning after the longest night.  In spite of her primary school teacher telling her she should only do silent singing, Liz is now performing with some of Scotland's finest musicians. Funny how things work out in the end!
