Renowned for their innovative programmes and quality of playing, Hebrides Ensemble’s performance has been described as “…a stunning, breathtaking show.” (The Herald, June 2010).
Scotland’s foremost contemporary music group, Hebrides Ensemble, presents an exciting combination of chamber music, contemporary dance and percussion-playing, featuring percussionist Colin Currie and dancer/choreographer, Michael Popper.
Led by artistic director and cellist, William Conway, Hebrides Ensemble performs works by three of the UK’s most acclaimed living composers. We open with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ wonderfully colourful transcriptions of well-known Scottish Renaissance Dances. Then comes the virtuosic tour-de-force for virtuoso percussion and piano, The Axe Manual by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, with Colin Currie, followed by an ensemble work by Thomas Ades, Court Studies.
Dancer & choreographer Michael Popper joins Hebrides Ensemble for the final work, Maxwell Davies’ famous music-performance art piece Vesalii Icones (1969), for solo dancer, cello and chamber ensemble.
