Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans

The show involves the projection of the classic silent movie Sunrise accompanied by the quintet’s performance of Graeme’s specially written soundtrack.

Considered by many to be the finest silent film ever made by a Hollywood studio, Frank Murnau’s Sunrise represents the art of wordless cinema at its pinnacle. The Oscar winning film’s narrative concerns a married man who falls for a slatternly woman from the city; once under her spell the woman attempts to persuade him to drown his wife. Sunrise won an Academy Award for Unique and Artistic Production at the first ever Academy Awards ceremony in 1929 and in a 2002 critics' poll for the British Film Institute, Sunrise was named the 7th best film in the history of motion pictures.

Award-winning Aberdeen-born guitarist Graeme Stephen has composed a powerful new score that brings a modern perspective to accompany Murnau’s visual masterpiece. Harnessing influences from various musical styles including folk, classical and jazz, Graeme will be performing with a world-class band featuring Chris Stout (violin), Ben Davis (cello), Phil Bancroft (saxophone) and Chris Wallace (drums/percussion).
