Described by Vanity Fair as “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade or so”, Fred Hersch balances his internationally recognized instrumental skills with achievements as a composer, bandleader, and theatrical conceptualist, as well as remaining an in-demand collaborator with other noted bandleaders and vocalists.
Amongst his many achievements, he was the first artist to perform solo at the legendary Village Vanguard's 75 year history and the live album Alone at the Vanguard was nominated for two Grammy Awards. He has collaborated with artists as varied as Kurt Elling, Stan Getz, Dawn Upshaw and Renée Fleming and has taught a new generation of players including Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus.
“Singular among the trailblazers of their art, a largely unsung innovator of this borderless, individualistic jazz - a jazz for the 21st century.” (New York Times - read the full feature article here)
