Daniel Johnston

4 November 2009 at 7:30pm
at The Queen's Hall

Daniel Johnston is a Texan singer, songwriter and artist who has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience.

The bulk of his acclaim snowballed from a series of homemade, lo-fi cassettes which he started recording and handing out to fans and friends alike in the early 80s. Eventually, the independent label Homestead re-issued some of these tapes on CD.

Daniel gained his widest public exposure when, in 1992, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain (who constantly touted Daniel in interviews) wore a Johnston T-shirt. This was followed In January 2005, when the feature-length documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston premiered at Sundance Film Festival. This is a painfully honest appraisal of Daniel's musical influence and his ongoing struggle with bipolar disorder. He has recently collaborated with Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse for the well received 2003 release Fear Yourself. This was followed by the tribute album Discovered Covered - The Late Great Daniel Johnston where his songs were covered by the likes of Beck, TV on the Radio, Eels, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes and Teenage Fanclub.
