Songs of Farewell

Purcell: Anthems and organ music
Parry: Songs of Farewell

Gregory Batsleer: conductor; SCO Chorus; Stuart Hope: organ; soloists

SCO Chorus presents a specially staged performance of Parry’s Songs of Farewell, devised by SCO Chorus Director Gregory Batsleer, winner of the 2015 Arts Foundation Fellowship and Herald Angel-winning director Jack Furness.

The performance will interweave Hubert Parry’s masterful song-cycle for choir with texts by Shakespeare, Graham Greene, Thomas Browne, and Virginia Woolf, among others. With an original script by Jack Furness, two Scottish actors and a 40-strong chorus, this unique and poignant interpretation of Parry’s work will offer a meditative examination of attitudes towards death and loss shot through with a dialogue between medical and religious understandings of life's final moments.

A new departure for the SCO Chorus, this concert will invigorate Parry’s fine choral writing with a fresh approach to the concert experience.
