Truly this is a night for youthful genius. Mozart was around 24 years old and Schubert barely 18 at the time of writing their respective works. The symphony may sound like an effortless, delightful half hour – but we know it cost Schubert much effort and several rethinks. Mozart’s ballet music originally closed his opera Idomeneo, and hits a suitable festive tone to celebrate its happy ending.
