Garden of Early Delights
The garden of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries brought forth a rich harvest of symbolism and literary associations: in the shady groves of Italian madrigals and early operas, pastoral shepherds enjoy the delights of love; in English, Spanish and Dutch plays, Romeo serenades Juliet in the orchard garden by moonlight. Nightingales sing, we hear the soft music of recorders and plucked strings. With authentic daring, French chansons are given Neapolitan glosas and Venetian passagi. European echoes and continental chromatics colour John Dowland's English melancholy. Divisions by Diego Ortiz, Jacob van Eyck and Giovanni Bassano transform vocal polyphony into dazzling instrumental solos.
