Gavin Bryars: Eight Irish Madrigals
Joel Rust, Martin Suckling, Dylan Curran and Eric Allen: If I Should Ever
With Susan Hamilton, soprano and Nicholas Mulroy, tenor.
When McFall's released their recording of Gavin Bryars' Eight Irish Madrigals in 2009 it was met with tremendous critical acclaim and received a 5-star review from Norman Lebrecht, who wrote: "If I challenged you to name ten living composers whose music will be played 50 years from now, Gavin Bryars would be among my certainties. Never heard of him? Born in Yorkshire in 1943 and best known for two stage shows with Robert Wilson, he works at the nexus of polyphony and post-minimalism, seducing the ear with deceptively simple sounds whose complexity is revealed in the aftertaste."
Now the group is bringing this wonderful work back to the concert hall, alongside new settings of poetry by Edward Thomas from young composers under 30. The result of a Call for Scores in 2010, this four movement work by four different composers will provide an inspiring companion piece to Bryars' haunting work. We are delighted to welcome back Susan Hamilton and Nicholas Mulroy (the soloists from the original Bryars recording) for these performances.
Please note: this event takes place at St John’s Episcopal Church, Princes Street (corner of Lothian Road), Edinburgh EH2 4BJ
