Rebellion

The Avison Ensemble led by Robert Howarth explores the relationship between Handel and Scotland during the troubling times of the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745. Alongside wonderful excerpts from Ariodante and Rinaldo they present Handel’s anti-rebellion songs with Charles Avison’s pro-rebellion song sketches recently discovered scrawled in the margins of his workbooks, artfully arranged and brought vividly to life. With soprano Mhairi Lawson playing Ariodante and Lisa Wilson as Ginevra, the King of Scotland’s Daughter, they end the concert with the opera's final duet “Bramo haver mille vite”.

“Praise be to the Avison Ensemble it was a performance that was made by the intimate relationships created among the soloists and with the ensemble.” (The Guardian)
